Cruise ship experts warn of ‘disgusting’ food to always avoid at the buffet

Cruise ship vacationers are being advised to be mindful of certain foods in onboard buffets.
Self-proclaimed cruise enthusiasts have taken to sharing their experiences with the buffet food commonly found in communal dining areas of these sea vessels, some of which they described as ‘disgusting’. Given that buffets are often a significant feature of most all-inclusive cruise deals, this advice might be invaluable.
Seasoned cruise goers offered their best buffet tips on Reddit, and had specific recommendations for food items to avoid. One user suggested opting for freshly prepared food rather than dishes that had been sitting out too long.
They remarked: “Leave the barely cooked bacon on the line, ask for the crispy cooked bacon and they usually have a bucket of it behind the counter.”
Another Reddit user voiced their preference for having scrambled eggs prepared fresh at the omelette station instead of choosing the pre-made ones. The individual pointed out: “If the scrambled eggs look disgusting on the line because they’re too wet or you don’t like powdered eggs, ask the omelette station to make dry scrambled eggs.”, reports the Mirror.
An additional fan of freshly cooked eggs on cruises layered their view: “They can add cheese/tomato/ham etc. in your scrambled eggs, plus the eggs are fresh and not powdered.”
While you might think you’re stuck with the buffet spread as is, don’t hesitate to chat with the staff about whipping up something special. A savvy Reddit user shared a tip: “If you don’t see something you want, ask for it. My eldest eats plain yoghurt every day for breakfast. She asked and the head server made sure a bowl was waiting each morning for the rest of the cruise.”
Cruising the high seas can get monotonous meal-wise, but there’s no need to settle for the same old dishes. Jazz up your dining experience by getting creative.
For instance, crafting an affogato at sea is a breezejust plunge your soft-serve or scoop of ice cream into a steaming cup of coffee. And why not lavish that luscious combo over brownies or cakes?
And when it comes to burgers on board, remember you’re the captain of your condiments. One seasoned cruiser advised: “This should be obvious to some but you’re allowed to customise your burger. You can ask for bacon, double patties, extra cheese, etc. A lot of people just ordered regular burgers and didn’t know they could customise them until they saw us do it.”
Others highlighted the ability to pick items from the salad and antipasti buffet section and have them incorporated into custom-made dishes at chef stations. One individual shared: “My husband likes to grab artichokes from the salad station and have them put them on his pizza! ”
Another person noted: “The options are endless! I’ve grabbed artichokes to add to pasta.”
A third cruiser commented: “I would get other stuff I liked at the salad station and had them use it for the stir-fry. Best one was on new years day I got fries from the sandwich station cheese from the buffet and gravy from the carving station. Cruise ship poutine.”
